ART DIRECTORS CLUB
New York, NY
The Art Directors Club was founded in 1920 as an organization that would dignify and support the advertising arts and art directors, and later, new media and film. Their new home on 29th Street accommodates offices, a library, and a large multi-purpose two story gallery on street level. A generous stair connected to a second floor balcony, the full depth of the space, is used to access the offices and provide viewing to the gallery space below. On the second floor, a wall of aluminum panels and sliding frosted glass panels provides a flexible diaphragm between the office spaces and the gallery below. The gallery space is used for art exhibitions, lectures, professional gatherings, and Art Directors Club supported award events, including the annual Hall of Fame Awards, which are considered the Oscars of the Advertising Business. Former winners include Charles Eames, Paul Rand, Raymond Loewy and Andy Warhol.
