ART BARGE

New York, NY

A decommissioned barge was purchased by Chelsea Piers to be transformed into the Art Barge. The barge, to be moored in a vacant slip just south of Chelsea Piers, was to be a destination for cultural and sproting events, and a variety of restaurants and bars. A multi-story logia was added to the north side on the barge’s main deck, containing the main entry, a kitchen, utilities, and a stair to an upper level bar. A large projection screen was mounted to the logia for the screening of films and as a backdrop for theatrical performances. The open deck also served as a special locale for art exhibitions, with the Hudson River as a unique backdrop, and a viewing tower inspired by lighthouse architecture. Several gangplanks were used to access and service the barge. The lower level contained kitchens, event spaces, restrooms, and offices. A floating dock with kayak, sailboat and paddleboat rentals is accessed directly from the barge and offers transcendent experiences with the Hudson River below, the open sky above surrounded by the endless expanse of the New York City skyline.
