HOTEL GRAND UNION

New York, NY

The Hotel Grand Union, on East 32nd street was built in 1905 and has since been in continuous operation. Guzy Architects worked with the new owner, Alfa Development, on a gut renovation of the entire building, including a completely new ground floor, food service facility, elevator, offices, 29 different room and suite designs, development of bespoke furniture pieces, restoration of the facade, including reconstruction of original mahogany doors and transoms, restoration of original cast bronze awning frieze, and a new roof terrace and bar.

The ground floor was designed to create the ambiance of an intimate parlor floor in a large townhouse. A central entry hall leads to the reception area, and two lounges; one with a small bar and both opening onto the street. Beyond reception is a restaurant and bar. The residential scale of the main floor lets guests enjoy the experience of staying in a home-like setting, just steps from Madison Avenue in the heart of New York City.

The guest rooms include bespoke furniture pieces designed by the architects. A unique feature of each room is a small entrance hall that allows the arrival and the main space to feel luxurious and generous.
