RED ROOSTER

Woodstock, VT

Red Rooster is a full service restaurant and bar at the Woodstock Inn & Resort. The newly created space overlooks the Inn's park-like green, and a new grand stair leads to a terrace for dinning, and beyond; the Spa, the pool, and the green. A bar, reached directly from the Inn's main sitting room, leads to the dining area, which is organized around a central fountain under a new south-facing sculptural skylight. A solitary Japanese maple in a planter appears to float in the center of the fountain and the play of sunlight and water reflected on the light colored surfaces throughout the restaurant provides an ever-changing presence of natural light throughout the day. The finishes and furnishings are at home in the historical Inn yet are modern and fresh. Smoked larch floors, together with whitened larch wainscoting and furniture, provide a warm glow on the white walls and off-white linen acoustical ceilings. Italian glass light fixtures sparkle throughout the restaurant. The banquette fabric, called "The Story of My Life" by Maira Kalman, is contemporary in design but reminiscent of elaborate New England textiles of centuries ago.

The Woodstock Inn & Resort was the creation of Lawrence Rockefeller. The Inn was filled with his art, and his favorite painting, "Red Rooster", mysteriously disappeared long ago. The missing painting inspired the name of the restaurant. Laura Zindel, a Vermont based ceramic artist created original naturalist drawings displayed in the restaurant and unique illustrations for plates featuring local flora and fauna and, of course, a rooster.

The architects also renovated the lobby of the Woodstock Inn, and redesigned many of the common spaces and guest rooms.
