THE HOUSE AT SNEDEN'S LANDING

Sneden's Landing, NY

The House at Sneden's Landing is situated on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. The house is home to a couple, with a child, who work from home creating art and videos.

A quirky handmade cottage, built in the 1960s, was previously the residence on the site. This cottage was near the edge of the site closer to the Hudson. The site strategy was to locate the new house much closer to the road, in order to create a large open space towards the Hudson. The cottage was selectively demolished by removing all wood walls, floors, and roof elements, while retaining a portion of the stone work to produce an open air garden room ruin, with a framed view of the Hudson.

The house is thin and long, sited north/south parallel to the river, which allows direct views from most spaces in the home. One of the home studios is located on the second floor of the tower element, and the other is in its own wing north of the kitchen. Rough split cedar shakes provide a richly textured backdrop for the garden and ruin, while smooth cedar was used for fenestration, operable vents, and trellis elements. The row of operable vents in the main living space, as well as the vented portion of each window, take advantage of the prevailing breeze from the river side of the house to produce an effective passive combined wind and thermal ventilation system.
